Every watercraft owner anticipates hitting the water for the first time every season. Whether you’ve treated yourself to a new personal watercraft over the winter or maybe you’re just looking to freshen your current ride, this is a great opportunity to take inventory of all your marine essentials.

Mandatory safety equipment

Transport Canada requires a number of safety equipment for your watercraft. It’s a great idea to regularly inspect your gear to ensure everything is in good working order. When’s the last time you checked the expiration date on your fire extinguisher, the batteries on your flashlight, or tested your whistle or air horn?

This may also be a good time to replace and/or upgrade your PFD. There’s a wide variety of options available and, depending on your riding style, you may find one that offers greater range of motion and dexterity.

Fitted Covers

Watercraft are constantly exposed to harsh conditions, during transport, storage or just sitting baking in the sun at the dock. A fitted cover protects your PWV while keeping it clean. Most covers also offer access ports for fuel filler caps and storage compartments. A smaller day cover can be stored in the front storage compartment of the watercraft, and protect the seat from the sun and occasional bird droppings.

Fenders

Docking a watercraft can present a few challenges, especially those intended for larger boats. A compact fender or clip-on bumper can protect your hull from accidental scrapes and stows easily in most OEM storage compartments.

Additional Storage

Some of your longer watercraft adventures may leave you wanting more storage options. Most models can be equipped with stern or handlebar storage solutions, which offer easy access on longer day trips. Many stern storage bags also offer food and beverage cooler options.

Flush Hose

Leaving your watercraft in the water for extended periods can accelerate the corrosion of vital components, including the cooling system. Ensure you regularly remove your watercraft from the water and flush the cooling system as outlined in your owner’s manual. A flush hose can make the job much easier by providing more convenient access to the flushing hose connector on your watercraft.
